"Built with funds from the housing tax"

Until 1 December 2024

In 1922, the municipality of Vienna adopts a points system to allocate its apartments fairly and transparently, followed by the First Housing Program in 1923.

The Waschsalon takes these anniversaries as an opportunity to take a look at these new "people's apartments". How do the young working-class families live there - especially since, according to Otto Bauer in 1928, for the first time they have "not just a place to sleep, but an apartment"?

The Karl-Marx-Hof laundromat goes on a housing inspection together with the visitors.

Visitors to the exhibition learn a lot about apartment floor plans, the size, layout and furnishings of the apartments, they take a look at the cooking pots and make sure that the "House Rules for the Apartment Buildings of the Municipality of Vienna" are observed.
